This is a trade that’s been a long time in the making, haha! A year ago I saw this rifle posted on Reddit by a new milsurp collector who didn’t know Japanese rifles at all. He’d picked it up for cheap, so I asked if he’d like to sell it or trade. A year later we finally made a trade for an unissued ground 10th series Type 99.

This 9th series Howa is really neat due to the crudeness of it. The dust cover grooves are not present, the arsenal markings are very rough, and the bolt handle, floor plate tang, and bolt release look particularly bad, haha! Firing pin and safety are mismatched. Only the last few of this series were made without the dust cover grooves, so it’s pretty uncommon. Surprised it’s not a rope hole honestly, as a few exist near this serial range!

The fact you hauled this off a Reddit thread is absolutely awesome and shows your true level of dedication in acquiring Japanese rifles. I salute you sir!

Thanks for the comments everyone! It’s a rifle I’m super excited to own. I really like the late war rifles without dust cover grooves. Just gotta find a 9th series Izawa with that style receiver now haha!

Interesting our rifles are so close but different in that way! Maybe a small window where the no dust cover receiver was used? Or just sporadic use of that style?
