Value of a Type 2 Arisaka Paratrooper Rifle (Front Half and Back Half Mismatched)

I have a chance to buy an Arisaka Type 2 paratrooper rifle that I’ll be looking at this Monday. As it was described to me on the phone, the gun has not been tinkered with or refinished after the owner’s uncle brought it back from the Pacific, BUT the front and back half of the gun are mismatched (which I believe is how he brought it back). The back half numbers, including the dust cover, all match (except of course the Type 2 assembly # on the left side of the receiver cover and the disassembly screw on the right side of the receiver cover. The mum has a couple of file marks but is mostly there and the finish on the metal and wood is all original. I know the gun may not be fully as described on the phone in answer to the questions I asked, but, assuming that it is close to what I know at this point, can anybody out there give me a ball park idea of what they think it’s worth?

Hello ncsammy :

If the rear half is fully matching so will the bolt assembly and dust cover, the wire bail should be the same as the rear half assembly number, that might explain why it is not matching to the last three digits of the rifle serial number. Does it have the cleaning rod, sling, muzzle cover ?. So depending on condition and completeness it is worth whatever the seller thinks it's worth, it might be in the 500 to 1500 range.
There is a list among the stickies of reported Type 2 halves that are not matching, there is a 20,000 to 1 chance that you or someone might have the matching half to someone else's rifle, not only will the front half have to match by the last 3 digits but also by the assembly numbers to yours.

Thanks for the quick response Vic. The assembly # on the left side of the receiver does match the number on the locking screw on the right side. The gun has a cleaning rod but nothing else. I may actually be seeing it tomorrow (Sun.) so I should know a lot more about the condition. I'll take your range of values (and the estimates of anybody else who's willing to toss out a number) into consideration.

Hello Sam :

As you will have gathered value / price is a much debated subject, you will get the typical I got mine for 35.00 ( yeah back in 1955 ), or gave the widow 50.00 ( actually stole it at that price ), 310.00 at a gunshow ( 1987 when you could buy 99s for 50 bucks all day long ) . Now it is 2,500 to as much as 3,000 ( the problem is that 95% of the ones for sale are not in that condition nor worth that much ). It is for that reason that I gave you the range of 500 to 1,500 .
Much depends in how badly you want one, whether you are willing to live with a mismatch halves and cancelled mum. My present one is full mum and matching rear half but mismatched front to back, rod and canvas sling with a quick disconnect latch, hard to update at todays prices. Naturally it will also depend on how much the seller thinks his piece is worth and if you are the proverbial sucker born every day. Good luck.

Save your money and buy a matching one. The mismatch will never appreciate the way a matching one will. As Vic says, figure $1,800 to $2,500 for matching. If I would even buy a mismatch (and I wouldn't) I wouldn't pay more than $500 to maybe $700. There were several at the MAX show, and I know where 2 matching are for sale right now in the $1,800 range (IIRC?). Really, put the money you were going to spend on the mismatch in an envelope and add to it from time to time, pay for the matching one when it pops up. Skid

There is/was a mismatched one on GB that ended today, starting bid was $500; last time I looked it had one bid, for $500 that did not meet the reserve.

Auction ended at $551, reserve not met; so it didn't sell.

Relisted, but I misspoke, it started at $1.00 and had 6 bids, highest was $551.

More to the Ty.2 I started this thread with. I did buy it for $600. The mum has light cuts across it but it is still plainly visible. The front and rear ends are mismatched. Everything on the rear matches the receiver including the dust cover. Almost all the screw heads are untouched and the metal and wood finish is original. The metal has browned in some places (most notably the dust cover) and the wood has typical dents and dings. I've attached some pictures. I already have a minty, matching Ty. 2 and I was buying this strictly on price.
