I recently added this 3-date and was well aware that the mag does not have the correct ‘MI’ to be a factory correct mag as it carries ‘YOSHI’… but the correct number.

Clearly, it was recalled and updated with an added mag safety and updated bolt.

Here’s the gun…. mag pics to follow.

Okay, notice the serial number on the trigger guard… it’s the original TG, but the “2” was an over stamp, and you can see the metal behind was lightly battered before the “2” was stamped. (As an aside, the 275 font on the TG is identical to the unbattered cocking piece).

Now, the mag also has light battering beneath the “2” & “5”… so “renumbered”… and the “7” looks original.

… when I looked closely at the mag… I see that “275” was lightly etched on the body of the mag! Perhaps, this was a precursor to the Japanese actually re stamping the spine?

(I guess it could have been etched by a dealer to show the price of the mag or gun, but I think not.)

The theory is next…

So, all those early guns were sent back to Arsenals for updating. Certainly, they all weren’t returned to the Arsenals with their original issued mags.

Possibly, some when returned to be updated, also had a “new matched” mag fitted and renumbered at the same time. Perhaps this is one example!

Bob,

I agree with your theory. This pistol was fixed in the recall by Kokubunji ("TO" mark in the B position and confirmed "to" mark on parts per our private conversation). That probably happened prior to 9.11/9.12 when Kokubunji stopped using the small "to" mark. The remarked "2" on the trigger guard was done when the pistol was originally produced, as the "thin" font is Tokyo/Kokura. The later Tokyo Type II YOSHI-marked mag (produced between 3.11 and 5.5) was reserialized using a font different from the "thin" font used by Tokyo/Kokura. The "2" and "5" font is "fatter" and is exactly like the font used by Kokubunji. So, the remarked mag was likely added by Kokubunji during the recall and refurbishment. But, that is not a certainty, as it could have been added anytime in the past. Regardless, this is an interesting example showing the possible part-matching efforts undertaken during the refurbishment. Nice pistol.
