For who is wondering: the Beretta 1918 is not a submachine gun. There is Italian Army documantation that states that and also manuals from 1920s.
Here's proof video I made about it.

It can't fire in full-automatic, the trigger only trips the sear once per trigger pull. The sear resets even when the trigger is held down and stops the bolt after a single cycle.

Most authors have mistakenly been operating under the assumption that the Beretta Model 1918 (which wasn't even its actual name - but that's a whole other issue) was an SMG, even thought it was actually a semi-automatic carbine.

Interesting thread....thanks for starting it Vittoria Vaglio.

To me this is "typically Italian"....creative, great engineering but poor follow through/production. I mean that in teh least infuriating but most exasperating way. I admire the Italian soldier. Really amazing what they accomplished with at best poor leadership in both world wars.

So many interesting/good designs that were not developed or produced in small numbers.
