Star Modelo Super question

I stopped by the LGS today and they had Modelo Super for sale there. Looked like original finish, good bore, slide and frame matching. Seems like a good quality handgun. Chambered in 9mm Largo. Never had or fired one before. Import marked. Priced at $299. Couple of questions: Were any other parts numbered? Any known problems? Accuracy? Is it a fare price? I do have a good amount of 9mm Largo ammo and Starline brass (used to reload for several Astra 400s I had). No extras, just the pistol. Tnx

other numbers? Depends on the pistol being military contract or civilian. Spanish military normally added a inventory number ( often to slide and frame sometimes just frame) mostly to the left side but as with all Spanish stuff will be differences.......most of the AF pistols were marked with number and insignia on right side. Price is right if import mark is unobtrusive less if engraved onto the slide billboard fashion. Police pistols used a variety of markings and crests.

I have a couple, but am a relative rookie compared to some on this board.

From my uneducated perspective:
  • numbered parts- unknown
  • problems- not so much with the Supers; the non-Super imported B's (from Russian stock) were known to be iffy.
  • accuracy- my two are quite accurate mechanically. 5" barrels, single stack mag, 1911-style grip angle... they're for me, as good as anything else I have.
  • fair price- I'd say yes. I bought one a couple months ago for around $270, online- so shipping and FFL transfer fees came into play. It was in decent mechanical, fairly rough cosmetic condition. Years ago I got a Super B for $250, in good condition, not during a panic, with a 9x19 barrel. Given the current environment, about $300 is not bad, as long as you have the ammo available.
Couple of observations from my experience: I found a 9x19 barrel for my recent purchase, and also a 9x23 barrel for my older one. That makes both dual-caliber guns with just a barrel swap. There are members of this site who own parts (including barrels) and should be able to provide that option reasonably.

Sarco has/had mags for the Largo Super, which ran in both my guns well. They were under $20 as I recall. Had to search some to find them, weren't easy from their own drop-down... which means they may still have some. You basically have to search "sarco largo magazine" in google, as they aren't listing under Star parts. ** I found them, they're $24.95 Original Star Super 9MM Largo magazine
I found they were great with Largo in both guns, fine with steel 9x19, had some trouble with aluminum cased (Federal) in one. No issue with brass Aguila.

Personally, I'd recommend owning one, and getting this one if you don't already have one. Finding any ammo is a PITA right now, and being able to run Largo gives you more options. The Super is a decent enough gun, gives you a 1911-ish platform. Picking up a 9x19 barrel for it makes it good for Luger options if/when that comes available, so you can keep shooting it.
I also have a Chinese Tokarev that runs 9x19 and 7.62x25 (7.63x25) with a simple barrel swap, for the same reason.

Thank you for the input, guys. I am not sure if it was military or civilian contract, but it had a tiny 9mm Largo stamp on the chamber and it was import stamped on the right side with a really small one line address. I did some reading last night and seems like firing pin is a weak point of the design and strangely enough rear sight has to be removed in order to get to it. Ammo would not be an issue, I reload 9x23 Largo with 9x19 dies without any problems and still have plenty of Starline Largo brass, though a lot of cases were lost shooting Astra 400. I don't think I've ever had a pistol that throws empties out that far.

Your firing pin concerns are not necessary if you refrain from dry firing the pistol. The pin in the Supers ( and most Stars) has a notch for the retaining pin creating a weak point and the pin is a very small circumference I have 80-90 Star pistols and shoot them often, never replaced a pin I broke but replaced several that were broken upon purchase. The pistols are very accurate if we do our part, rather than change barrels I have both Largo and Luger pistols ( A & B).

I like to keep a variety of pins for my various Star pistols, however, most pins must be fitted to an individual weapon. Gun Parts Corp and others have pins in stock but the best way is using the services of Bill DeSilva found on this forum and have one custom made and fitted. If you can get a pistol like the one shown for $250 grab it.....about half what it is worth.
