Hi All,
The other day, I was down at the Kittery trading post peering around for anything of interest, and I came across what i thought was an excellent deal. It was $45 for 90rnds of Portuguese 1945-1947 mfg 8mm. After taking it out and shooting, I can solidly say that this ammo is rubbish. I compared it with 2 other ammo types out of my 1942 k98k. It was s&b soft points and greek 8mm surplus ammo. As far as performance, the greek preformed well, and the s&b did excellent(not unexpected) but the Portuguese couldn't hit anything from 200m, despite painting the same target with the other ammo types. I also had about 4 duds out of 40 rnds, and another 5-6 hangfires. That being said, im not too unhappy, as its at least SOMETHING to feed the k98k, as all other ammo types are hard to come by or have outrageous shipping costs. Hopes this helps someone

PORTUGUESE 7,9 Ammo come in Two Flavours: Manure from the 1940s, ( FCPQ) and 3-Star Michelin Restaurant ( FNM, late 60s early 70s.
The 1940s is Corrosive and badly stored ( Angola, Mozambique) and the FNM 60s-70s is Noncorrosive, Zinc Sealed crated, Portugal Stored excellent Brass, Powder and Berdan Primers ( which I regularly reload and reform to other cases.)
FNM, HXP are the Tops in 7,9 as Milsurp. MKE ( Post-1952 Turkish ) also.

Not sure about the 1940s ammo being noncorrosive, but the Portugese I have shot has been exceptionally good ammo. You're right, storage can make ALL the difference. A few years ago, I bought several hundred rounds of pre-war and early war German 8mm, which most people seem to really like; mine must've been stored poorly because at least 75% had bad primers. I ended up pulling the bullets and powder and used it in new brass.
