Just picked this one up from Simpson LTD this week -- a 1978 CG 63 built on a 1906 M96 receiver.

Thanks! I'd been eyeballing their site for a few weeks and saw this one show up on 9/25 and snagged it. This one must have been used a bit -- it had an improvised mirage shield made out of a Swedish measuring tape attached on top of the barrel with electrical tape and a zip tie. Probably not the best move for historical accuracy, but I took that off.

Shield had been on there for awhile -- the wood that was under the tape is a slightly different color.

What is a good oil to refresh the stock on this? I don't want to remove the existing finish . . . it is just a bit dried out in spots. I like raw tung oil, but I'd like to use whatever is on it.

Oh . . . and I cannot make out those barrel markings (last pic). Is that a CG stamp? Wondered if the barrel might have been replaced on it. But it is one of the later CG 63s.

That one appears broken . I had one with tabs that tucked under the front of the hand guard and had a square ended fork that slid under the sides of the front sight hood . Never used it , so I do not know that it needed tape or a zip tie ?????????????

It does look like one end is broken. It has holes drilled for a zip tie at one end and a sort of two-prong hook around the barrel near the handguard. At the handguard, the previous owner also had it wrapped with electrical tape, which got stuck on the bubble wrap during shipping. The front band clip was also detached when the rifle arrived, so I snapped that back in place after removing the remainder of the tape.

The Swiss Company made the Elite diopter sights illegally and were sued over patent infringement by the Swedish Company & won in court . I do not know how much money was involved , but the Swiss Company had to stop making their Elite sights . In the late '90's , SAMCO Global was selling the complete front & rear Swiss Elite diopter sights for $199.95 . Once sold out , no more were available for sale .

Simpsons has had many CG-63s over the years and still imports them from an agent when available. My recent rifle is absolutely perfect, with a better bore than my original one but both shoot fantastically well. Both will shoot to 1000 yards with a little load development even though the rear sight stops just past 600 meters. Bought my latest one when Simpson had their 20% off sale. Doesn't get much better than that. ;)

Thanks for your reply. I ordered a set of inserts from bof*** on Ebay back a couple of years ago and after more than a month did not receive them. Ebay asked me if i wanted to cancel the order which I did. He then blocked me from any future orders and correspondence. Sounds like I am not the only one who have had issues with him.

I took a close look at my front insert ... it is labeled 21 at the base. I'm going to a range next weekend -- what sizes of round targets should I buy to get this rifle sighted in well?

Most of my shooting will be limited to 100 or 200 yards at the rifle ranges closer to me, so I'll probably do a 100-yard zero. The one next weekend has some 500 yard steel I'd like to try once I'm sighted in.

Best to get an assortment of targets and see which size works?
