I have a replica of the Model 1876 Winchester rifle in 45-60 caliber made by Uberti and imported by Cimerron Arms. This rifle has one of the slickest loading and functioning actions rifles I own. Out to 300 yds. it is quite accurate with my smokeless powder hand loads & 300 grain hard cast lead bullets. There is very little mentioned in this forum concerning the 45-60 round and I think that is a shame. I make my own 45-60 cases from trimming back 45-70 brass that has been fired a few times and hand loading with these cases is just as easy as loading 45-70 ammo. Most articles I read about these older rounds mentions 40-65 and 45-70 but very little about 45-60. I wonder why that is. Are there any other folks in this forum who like and shoot the 45-60 like I do ??

Balti, veeman ----- Thanks for looking and your comments. Yes, you had better pull out that 45-60 and put a few rounds down range. I know you'll like it. The rounds I make using trimmed 45-70 cases are quite accurate and feed through the action very smoothly. At a range where I attend, I've let other shooters fire the 45-60 and they don't want to give it back until the mag is empty, even then they don't want to. It is such a pleasant round and rifle to shoot.
I've watched "Crossfire Trail" and "Tom Horn" several times where the Mod. 1876 carbine and rifle are used and really enjoy the movie each time I watch it. The hard cast 300 grain lead bullets I use are from Rim Rock Bullets in Polson, Montana and they are excellent bullets. Quite inexpensive and very easy loading using my trimmed 45-70 cases, 14 grains of Trail Boss smokeless powder and std. large rifle primers. I always seat a fiber wad between powder and base of the bullet. That is a good combination in my rifle.

I hope someday to make my own repro 1876 from an original action. It was originally a
45-60 . Had thoughts of changing to 50-95 ,but still in the dream phase.
I'm hoping to make a lot of the parts using original drawings and modern steel.
Many visions from custom finished color cased and fancy wood to just leaving it as found and making everything match.
No time for the project currently .

Just came in from firing my '76 uberti 40 60 for the first time. Great shooter. 245gr .406 bullet over 55gr. WANO black powder. First five shots off hand went in 2" @ 50 yards. Very happy.
I also have a '76 uberti in 45 60 that shoots well. I'm shooting a 300gr. .460 bullet with black powder, I don't recall how many grains. (maybe 58gr.?)
I also have a '76 uberti in 50 95. It shoots a 320gr. .513 bullet over black powder. I think around 83gr. if I recall correctly. I mainly smash silly wets with it. Also very accurate and a very powerful round.
I have farted around with smokeless with all of these but black powder is a lot more fun.

stoog ------ Thanks for the good posting above. Sounds as though you really enjoy your '76 rifles and put them to very good use. I've never tried shooting black powder in my '76 mostly due to the cleanup mess to go through after the range trip. I've had very good luck with Trail Boss smokeless powder and 300 grain hard cast lead bullets in the 45-60. I always use a fiber wad between to powder charge and base of the bullet. Accuracy with this combo is quite good out to 300 yds. Keep burning powder.
