This is also posted on the miltary Mauser forum and there haven't been any replies there as yet.

Brand new to this forum. I hope that someone out there in Mauser-land can decipher the unit markings on a bayonet I have for my Model 1871 single shot Mauser.

Both the bayonet and scabbard have unit markings but are not the same, so here goes:

Bayonet: E.10.H.E.1.135 Bayonet is serial numbered as well.
Scabbard: 3.R.6.88

The scabbard also has unit markings that have been “X’ed” out. Assuming this was the original unit, then re-assigned to the above described unit.

The marked out unit on the scabbard is: 3.R.R.6.241

Any help that y’all can do will be greatly appreciated.....

Hi Thunderstick51,

I am new to this forum also, and you don't live too far from me. As a matter of fact my ancestors settled Friendsville, MD. Try this site <http://www.cruffler.com/trivia-December99.html>
The site gives the various codes, and what the numbers mean to decipher Prussian or Imperial German Regimental Markings.
The letter E. could mean Erzatz or "Replacement Unit" and all of the other letters are listed within the information on the site.
I believe the information will help you to decipher the markings on your bayonet and scabbard.

R, Friend

Welcome to gunboards.com forums!

E.10.H.E.1.135 has me stumped. Are all of the letters block letters or are any of them script letters? This is a very unusual marking. Are the E's really E's and the H really an H? (sorry to ask such an elementary question)

3.R.6.88 is probably the Grenadier-Regiment König Friedrich Wilhelm I (2. Ostpreußisches) Nr.3, Kompagnie 6, Waffen Nr. 88
[in English, 3rd Grenadier Regiment, King Friedrich Wilhelm I 2nd East Prussian, Company 6, Weapon No. 88]

3.R.R.6.241 depends on whether the R's are block or script letters and in what order.

Well, "Marysdad" here is a bit more detail:
This bayonet is worn and with a magnifier glass, I still have to say that the marking on the bayonet is "E.10.H.E.1.135." As far as the scabbard goes, the first "R" in both markings is a script "R", the second "R" is a block letter. So, what does all this mean to me, a novice?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Script R; block R typically indicates a reserve infantry regiment or a recruiting depot associated with a reserve infantry regiment. Many reserve infantry units were equipped with the M1888 Commission Rifle and M1871 bayonet during the First World War.
