Hi, last week I purchased a very nicely done Mauser sporter (K98) with a Buehler safety installed (low clearance for use with a scope). With that said- I have been unable to break down the bolt for cleaning, and would appreciate any advice/assistance in this endeavor. I understand that the Buehler safety functions in a "reversed" fashion, as opposed to a normal Mauser safety- in that with the Buehler safety, the firing position is to the full right, and safe is to the elevated position (it can't swing up to 90 degrees or over to the far left). Compare to the "normal" Mauser safety- in which full right is safe, and far left is the fire position. With the bolt cocked- and the safety in the elevated position, I am unable to disengage the bolt body from the bolt sleeve (I'm depressing the bolt sleeve plunger while I do this- as you would normally do in breaking down the bolt). There must be a step in the process that I'm missing with this- any assistance is greatly appreciated, would love to get that bolt cleaned out- thanks!!

It takes a dime or a penny.

What you need to do is to use a cartridge case rim to engage the small notch on the right rear of the cocking piece and pull it back until you can insert a dime into the gap on the left side that will appear between the cocking piece and the bolt sleeve. It takes some strength of pull to retract it this far but with the dime inserted, the bolt sleeve can be rotated to take it apart. The dime is softer than the bolt parts and so will probably be marred so that it will jam a parking meter but it won't damage the bolt. I like the Buehler safety because they do lock the firing pin instead of just being a trigger block and as I usually carry the rifle over the right shoulder when using a sling. You don't accidently disengage the safety from brushing your coat like a left side operating FN deluxe safety.:)
