If a M57 has no safety at all, then this would indicate a early production gun?.Or have they been made concurrently with safety and without according to who the end user was after manufacture?.

Recently M57's have been imported with trigger safeties (like seen on Glocks). Prior to these imports , M57's will be found with external safeties added to the frame or slide, requiring a hole drilled for mounting. THE ADDED SAFETY IS ONE OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE GUN CONTROL ACT OF 1968 FOR US IMPORTATION. No military issue TT33 models were produced with a safety, with the exception of the 1958 Tokagypt (for Egypt).
Trigger safeties can be replaced with original triggers without modification.

Zastava in Serbia currently manufactures them, including the military 'version' M57, the 'updated' M70 in x25 (marketed in the US as a non C&R '57') and 9mm, which has a shortened frame (like the M88 - 9mm compact Tok) etc.
So, those 'added on safeties', quite a few are nicely done because they're added at the factory during re-arsenal. The new made ones, have a safety to meet the 'points' requirement for import. One of the biggest issues for a Zastava Tok is that the civilian hammer pack for slide mounted safeties lacks the half cock, but IRC has de-cocking instead.

My Yugo M 57 has the left side mounted safetythat blocks the trigger. I guess it's OK and I won't remove it but it does detract from the overall looks of the piece. This piece is in 7.62 mm caliber and shoots very well with my reloads. I like the extra long mag. (9 shot) but I have only the one mag. that came with the piece. If 12 or 13 shot mags. were available for these pistols that would really be a great piece.

I was fortunate to score two nearly perfect M-57s that came with a "trigger safety". They were poorly made, had sharp edges, and loose roll pins. One came apart during shipping!

I have since replaced them with original triggers restoring all of their splendor and glory. The half cock is all that is needed and works very well at making the gun completely safe to carry. They can be carried with a round in the chamber and the hammer can easily be pulled back while drawing. No different than carrying any other gun with the safety on.

They are a pleasure to shoot, accurate, and reliable.
