Which one do you hang onto if you can only keep one and why? Just opinions.

Luger, but it’s all personal preference. I like the Luger’s gunsmithing/mechanical balance and interplays plus the way that it’s more “modern” in every way except the toggle over the slide. In hand, it’s almost like putting on a glove the way it just sits and naturally points at your target (especially those early ones without a stock lug). Plus, for the later ones with a lug, you can also make it like the C-96 and create a PCC. There’s almost nothing the Mauser can do that the Luger cannot do, except the Mauser’s .30 cal chambering is a little more powerful than the Luger’s .30 chambering.
My P08 was made at the Mauser factory. All of the tooling equipment was transferred there after the extensive allied bombing raids of Germany. The number 42 on the pistol is the Mauser factory code although some of the less knowledgeable think it is a date. Dates on Lugers were 19xx.
The answer really depends on what kind of Luger you have and also what kind a Mauser handgun you're talking about. There are a multitude of different types of Luger pistols each with different valuations. Mauser in turn made several different models of handgun, is it a Broomhandle? An HSC? Or even a Mauser made Luger? It's pretty difficult to answer your question without a little more detail.
I’m afraid I don’t quite understand the problem. You have both already, no?? If so, then what could possibly be wrong with that? Especially if you mean a C96. But my mind works differently I guess. If it’s just about money, then buying anything at all is poor planning. If there isn’t enough room for the two then id wager more planning is in order. If someone is telling you that two are too many, then planning may be a critical talking point regarding, well, planning. Just my opinions and not judgements. IMHO, two is just getting started…
