Hi all, looking to gather some information and try to date/authenticate some parts of a Lebel rifle that's being sold as a sniper configuration. I'm aware they only put the date on the barrel but i wanted to ask if anyone can roughly date the year the bolt was made and potentially confirm that this was a marksman rifle of the first world war.

The mount is missing the original mounting points for the scope which i believe would have been the Winchester A5 scope but has had modern fittings drilled into it and an APX 1917 scope mounted on that.

I believe the side plate mount is of an earlier type, though I'm not certain of the model it would be, however it doesn't appear to match the wear on the receiver unless the mount wasn't blued? supposedly there is no visible serial on the mount. The receiver is marked by Tulle.

From what the seller has said, if the screw that holds the mount in place is flush against the receiver without the mount, it extends too far and blocks the mechanism in the rifle.

The stock does still have a visible roundel but it would be too hopeful to decipher it as the stock overall has sustained quite a lot of bumps and dings, including a small repaired patch rear of the trigger guard.

From what I've read, the bolts were left without a finish until 1904, wanted to know if this bolt matches the look of a bolt left in the white.

This rifle has not been modified for the 1932 N Balle ammo.

Let me know if there is any more information i can give, any help will be greatly Appreciated!

Solved! I've been able to find on some french forums that the mount is a reproduction mount and i even found this exact rifle there being asked about. Thank you all for your replies!

I'm also no expert, but from referencing my book, it seems that the scope itself is authentic and the 1886/M-93 version of the Lebel is correct. It does not indicate if there is any way to distinguish if a particular rifle was used for sniper purposes or not. Your mounting bracket though is nothing like pictures of the original. Most likely a homemade piece.

Thanks for sharing those pics @RS . I had not seen the bracket, in your first photo, that is similar to the OP's. The OP's lacks the markings shown on the original, so that's further evidence that it's homemade or a reproduction piece. Replica Lebel wire breakers were made, so why not this accessory too...

Thanks for the welcome! I'm not going to bother with this one, I've found on some french forum that the mount is entirely repro. Had it just been modified with modern stuff I would have still gone for it since I felt I wasn't going to be paying much more for the setup. Cheers
