Every time this issue comes up it goes the same direction with most of the input being from people that never post here otherwise
It’s boring. Let’s grow up and move on

gunboards is owned by someone other than us. they make the rules. if we don't like them we can go somewhere else. it is sad to me a basic thing of courtesy and respect is so hard to abide by. I had several family members serve and if they wanted to use the term when they were alive ok they earned that right I did not. to attack Curly for doing his job is absurd. when you are in someone's house you go by their rules. be real guys it is just 5 more letters you can do it.it might seem silly that an abbreviated word is offensive but it is not our place to say.
Agree....All the forum is doing is asking people to wipe their shoes off at the door.....Bodes

HA,HA but insults get you nowhere !! My Mother used to say, [and others said it also,] "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" !! We're all supposed to be friends here, club members sharing information and our treasures. Is it also an opportunity to insult someone ?? NO !!! I say, "Grow up. Name calling is for stupid kids who don't know better so when you engage in that, it means you never matured" That's not to say in an argument , you can't speak out forcefully , but we're not in an argument , therefore when you use offensive terms, you're blindsiding someone who trusts you . It's wrong now and always will be . Just be polite is all I say. We're friends and we want to stay that way.

We’re all guests here; we do not own this site. Curly made a very simple request, one that’s easy to accept. We need the assistance of all knowledgeable people to make the site go. The abbreviated or slang form of Japanese can be considered offensive, especially as it pertains to WW2. If you check, you’ll find that my books written initially about 50 years ago use only the word ‘Japanese,’ no abbreviations or slang. As a matter of fact, check Frank’s and Don’s books. You’ll find the same thing. We’ve lost some people of Japanese descent due to this subject here on the boards who were, for example, translating documents. Others were avid participants. Still others showed off their collection. They’re gone now. Under similar circumstances I wouldn’t hang around this site either. I hope, like arisakadogs, this subject is behind us.

When I think of the word ,"Jap" ,I think of the propaganda campaign that produced Executive Action 9906 which ordered all Japanese in this country to be "Interned" in the interest of public safety. Growing up in NY , all I knew was the movie with Van Johnson, "Go For Broke" . When I moved to LA and went to work for the State of Ca. I met people who were swept up in that order. Some were veterans of the 442nd . I knew about The Nazi Camps and the way they treated the prisoners because many of the Death Camp refugees emigrated to NY . I used to see them , sitting outside in the summertime , with their tatoo's on their arms . I thought it was their phone number !! I knew nothing of the west coast camps for many American Citizens. I also met people who as kids were also locked up . They talked about the camps and when I started hunting , we went up to the Owens Valley , in Ca. and there off 395, was Manzanar . In 1968 the Guard tower was there as well as some parts of the buildings and barbed wire ,[which I took a piece of]. There were fruit trees planted by the internees that in the early fall were still producing. Some of the people I worked with were interned there . Taking it all in , I was ashamed that this country would treat CITIZENS , born here , as enemy aliens .
It takes a lot of guts to volunteer to fight for a country that took everything you had from you and your family , who still remained imprisoned . They , the ones I met and didn't meet , the kids who were now adults who were locked up, are why I use the term "Japanese " .

I truly hope you are not in any way drawing similarities between Nazi Camps and what we had in this country. To do so would demonstrate a breathtaking lack of understanding which is why I am absolutely certain the above was just mis-phrased.

This topic has been beaten to death, some find the word offensive others do not. As there is no need to unnecessarily offend I do not use the term. I however can see how some find it offensive when told that to use it is racist, which it is not just as Hun or Frog are not racist. To scream “racist” waters down true racism and our condemnation of that should never be diluted.

I also think it is outrageous to delete post that has information on the hobby simply because someone does not like the terminology. Shades of tearing down statues. Surely we are not that thin-skinned

It is, today, an archaic term…..simple as that….and the owners of this board request we do not use it so let’s not.

Sincerely - A Yank of Brit (Limey or Pom), Hun, Spud, Ruskie and a touch of Frog ancestry

There is a similarity between Nazi Camps and what we had in this country . Whenever anyone is locked up for no other reason than who they are, it's patently wrong. We called them, "Internment" the Germans called them "Concentration" . We won so it's not the same , right ?? Wrong. On top of the fact we have The Bill of Rights guaranteed to every citizen, which was summarily swept aside. We singled out one group and left the Italian and German citizens alone.
Topics like this are never beaten to death. They surface because they are never dead !! It's important to remind ourselves of that. Intentionally offending some stranger is wrong , even more so on a website that is supposed to be made up of friends.
You can abuse yourself with derogatory names if you like but you are not everyone and what you think is appropriate isn't the norm many of us adhere to. "Thinned Skinned" is a term people use when they've insulted someone intentionally and try to discharge it as the other persons fault. I could go on but a little self reflection may be good for you. Incredibly, you seem to think it's OK for some to insult us if they want to because "that's the way they are " . Well time to change is what I say.

There is no similarity between this:

and anything in the Internment Camps. To say there is denigrates the horror of the Camps.

Internment in the US was wrong but it should not even be in the same breath as the Nazi Camps.

“Abusing myself” ? Now that is truly funny. I find humor in being called a Limey, a Pom or anything else. ( God it was even a call sign of mine once), when people want to offend me they know how to do it but that is not the way. So yes, if a simple National epitaph can offend me I would be thin skinned and have a hard time with life.
