Japanese Bugle Use in WWII

I recently had a Peleliu vet tell me about a counterattack by Japanese soldiers that was started at night with the sound of a bugle. Another vet (in the same company who was very close to the first vet in the line) said that was nonesense and would have gave away the Japanese positions had a bugle sounded. I once found a whistle in a cave on the island and have always wondered if that was used as a way of communication during the battle or as a way to start a counterattack? Good question.
