Anyone ever seen an M39 with this type of SAKO mark? The rest of the barrel where the date and Sako gear label are tyically stamped is blank. The serial number is also strange for a Sako.

It's not an importers mark. They would have used 54R, not 53R. My guess it was done at the depot in finland

Thanks brcampbe, and thank you everyone for the responses. I've never run across such markings on an M39 before. Initially, I thought it might have been an importers as well, but I agree with USMCsean, it does look like it might be a depot mark similar to some I've seen on the 28/76's.

I received the M39 on Friday, and after looking it over, the Finnish/European commercial sale theory seems to make the most sense. The receiver, barrel, magazine, and barrel bands are all polished and blued. The stock is also very smooth with an oil or urethane finish. There is a stock maker's cartouche on the stock. No import marks were observed anywhere on the gun.

Interesting piece! I have one rifle, that has almost similar markings and it´s serial number is some eight thousand more. My rifle is quite close to m/28-76 configuration and it seems to be factory made. The biggest difference on the markings is, that mine has Sako´s inspector´s marking and Finnish proof marking (lions head). This rifle has known history and it came from Sako in this configuration.

So, Sako has made or at least sold 7.62 x 53R barrels or / and complete target rifles at some point after the WWII. I don´t have any idea, if these were unique items or a part of larger production. My GUESS is, that the first one is closer to truth...
