In German, I believe it's more like "Fet-tar-lee" - but the central vowel isn't quite like anything in English. Go the the LEO dictionary website at http://dict.leo.org/ende?lang=en&lp=ende&search=vetter and click the little speaker icon next to "der Vetter" to hear it spoken (if your computer does audio).

Of course it might be a bit different in Swiss-German. I'd be delighted if one of our native Swiss participants would record and post the real thing for us.

 

If the name is Swiss-German, the first "e" is accented but short, the second "e" is a "schwa" like the "i'" in "bird." The suffix "-li" is the Swiss-German diminutive, equivalent of "-lein" in Hochdeutsch.

 

It's the second time that I noticed this question on a forum and I wonder why do you bother ?

The pronouciation depends on the native language of the one saying it and I've never heard an English speaking person saying Vetter the proper way simply because you are not used to that pronounciation, what comes out sounds like featherr-lee but we all know what it is about.
Keep in mind that the Swiss have four native languages and each of these pronounces Vetterli in a different way.

reminded me of the italian pronunciation of carcano "CAR-cano" emphasis on the first part.

 

John it's not as worse as you wrote this down, the Italian Car is certaily there but not in the way you mentioned it.
We should keep in mind that we are not always able to pronounce specific words the same way as their original founders did...

Vetterli--Wetterli

There is also a variant spelling I came across in Italy, back in the 1970s...some older texts name it the "Wetterli" (W instead of V)...The German sound of W is like V in English and Italian...as the Swiss have Four languages, there are also differences of Spelling to accomodate pronunciation; "V" in German is Pronounced "F" ( as in VolksWagen or Vater), but W does not exist in Italian (not officially) and anyway, the name of the Inventor was from the Italian Cantons of Switzerland...hence the "V"...
