I got a new Chinese SKS sling w/ the leather tabs and silver button. The slits on the leather tabs are twice as long as the silver button, but I can't seem to get the button through the slit. Is there a trick to this? Update: I cut the slit a little longer and it worked...but not sure if there is a better way?!? TIA.

They can be stubborn. If you have some Neatsfoot oil or otherkleather conditioner put some of that on first. The button goes into the slit in the leather similar to a shirt buton. start the button into the slit from one side near the cross slit. Often, using a slotted scredriver to work open the lreather slit a bit helps. On new slings they are quite stiff.
There is a long and short side to the leather tab so decide how you want to mate it up and how the finished side will end up on the outside. You only ant to do it once and get it right as you can.

Good luck, I had one of them on my Norinco and the leather burned black when the barrel got "warm".
I have lightly soaked the leather tabs in water and then get one side started under the button head and use something like an unsharpened pencil to ease the opposite side over. This will help prevent tearing and it will shrink back tight when it dries.

I used a button assist tool used for the handicapped .My child has MD . so I had it handy and it worked great ..
I use those chicom slings with the leather tabs on my TOZ-78 carbines. The tabs fit the narrow, euro-style sling swivels on the TOZs perfectly.
