Doesn't look like it has enough curve for 7.62 AK mag.

 

Could it be two thirty round mags taped together?

 

I know what you mean about the curve, and it really doesn't look like 2 taped together. I'll try to post a better pic tonight.

 

How about an HK33 (43,93) mag, right curvature and some limited US forces used the HKs (Harrington adn Richardson T233 clone) and in .223 already.

Most likely is an AK mag.
The Navy guys in "Market time" in IV Corps modified a bunch of AK mags to fit their M16s. Gave them a 35 rd mag.
I had a friend who was working with them and was supposed to bring a couple for me when he came back. Unfortunately I got wounded and was gone when he returned.
I tried to modify an AK mag after I came home, but could never get it to fit. Still around here some where.

To me it doesn't look like there's a mag in that rifle at all. It looks like what we're seeing is something behind the rifle, maybe on his belt.
