I have an FAL mutt, it is a century receiver with an Isralei lower and Austrian front end. I was wanting to go all Isralei on the gun with a heavy barrel, the gun as it sits now has a Styer barrel. I was wondering if the Israeli heavy barrels are as good as the Styer ones? Would it be worth it to swap the front ends or leave the Styer barrel and just change the furniture? The Styer barrel is not a heavy one.

There is no advantage with a H.B. unless you are shooting sustained fire. The steyr barrel is very good for what the rifle was intended for. The H.B.s can be found if that is what you want to do if you are willing to pay the price. Check the FALFILES or Brad @ Gunthings for a barrel and front end parts. I just took my STG58 and put izzy furniture on it. I like Wood!

I saw a full Izzy(not full auto) at a recent show, it had an Izzy stamped bipod on it and the barrel appeared to be a heavy one and looked to be made for the bipod. I really liked the way it looked and would like to go that way with mine. That's why I was asking. Thats a good looking one you have there!

I have an early DSA built with the Steyr parts. It is hard to beat a Steyr hammer-forged chrome-lined barrel. Why do you want all of that extra weight of a HB, anyway? If you ever have to carry it and live with it you will appreciate that Steyr barrel. :) I would not consider the change a practical improvement, but it is your rifle... DDR

Barrel Swapping?

Barrel swapping is not a TRIVIAL process. If you don't have the proper equipment, there is a very good chance that you will damage/destroy either the barrel being removed or the receiver or both. Also, installng the new barrel is not easy. It must lock with the correct amouint of "crush" and still have the sights in the proper vertical alignment. Once the new barrel is installed, it will have to be head spaced. Do you have a series of varying sized locking shoulders to do the headspacing? Having built over 10 FALs, I can speak with experience.

I don't have the equipment to swap the barrels, but I know several local gunsmiths that could do it. As far as weight, it is the heaviest, longest gun that I own.
