There was a bayonet variant that required an adapter to mount to the rifle. The bayonet variant has a hollow in the pommel, where the knife variants do not.

This is a "ZEITLER 77", (there also was the structurally identical "ZEITLER 76").
The pommel recess took an adapter to attach this knife/bayonet onto the barrel of the "Steyr AUG 77" assault-rifle.
The "ZEITLER" was a commercial venture and finally the "GLOCK Feldmesser 78" won the competition.

The "FM78" also was in use in the famous German "GSG 9", ("Grenzschutz-Gruppe 9").
The Austrian "Jagdkommando", ("Hunting-commando"), aka "snake-eater´s", also the "EKdo Cobra", (Einsatz-Kommando "Cobra"), of the Department of the Interior, (this is the Austrian SWAT-unit), use this knife.

Intermediately, the attachable, (German-made), "KCB77M1" was introduced in the "Austrian Bundesheer" in small number´s to use with the "AUG 77", ("Armee Universal-Gewehr 77")
On doctrinal matters the attachable "KCB" was rejected and the "FM78" was established in the Austrian armed Forces and Austrian SWAT-units.
