Any way to mount a scope or red dot on 71/84 Mauser?

My old eyes just can't seem to really use the existing sights on my 71/84 Mauser and was wondering if anybody figured a way to mount a scope or even a red dot on the rifle? The red dot type sight might work better since it can be moved on down to the end of the action or even on the barrel -- just can't figure a way to do it cleanly. I can silver solder a rail on since the rifle had been modified as a hunting rifle but I want it to look nice and most of the commercial rails I've seen are made of aluminum.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Thanks for that info. My only problem is the rear sight and base had been removed and the barrel was shortened to 20". The original owner used Accurate 7744 smokeless powder under a 370gr lead bullet and said it shot fine. I was hoping to make a scope mount that was forward of the breach area and mount a LER scope like a scout scope on the rifle. I've got the work partially finished and I'm using a scope mount that was designed for the 340 Savage/Stevens bolt action that was mounted on the side of the receiver. I'm just moving it forward with an adapter. If it doesn't work I can try making a red dot mount to work with my adapter. I really wish I could find the original rear sight mount since it would look cleaner but I've checked all the gun parts places and E-bay with no luck.

Thanks for the reply and info,

Thanks for that info! I forgot all about the 88. When I was a kid my uncle gave me one that he thought he had deactivated by removing the bolt head. I think it was an 88 with a two piece bolt. Only problem was the firing pin was still there and a round could be chambered -- and I'd be it could have been fired. I'll try to locate the barrel tube with the sight base. Numrich wants $44 for the tube and I'd hate to spend that for something that might not work.
