I'm not sure how many had followed this auction on gunbroker. When it exceeded $ 20,000 I already thought people are crazy, but now that it ended at exactly $ 70,000 (plus taxes and shipping) I think set a new world record for a sniper rifle. Anyway, here is the link to the auction: Accuracy International AI German Bundeswehr G22 300WM ScharfschĂĽtzengewehr - Bolt Action Rifles at GunBroker.com : 909060687

What personally surprised me was the fact that such an ensemble exists in private hands. This is still a German Bundeswehr currently issued sniper rifle and I would not understand a reason why AI should make additional 10 sets to be sold on the US market which are fully identical to the German ones. The papers though proof that AI did this, still I do not get the sense.

I watched that auction very closely for days. At first, I thought that someone is just making "future investment", moving money away from the other assets or etc. But when $50k mark was broken, it has become apparent that this has nothing to do with investing anymore. This is the ultimate level of collecting: you have to have item X and the cost isn't an issue...this or someone was drunk and bidding out of the control... :ROFLMAO:

Met Malcolm and Sarah here in S.A. when they were preparing for the Atlanta Olympics and on our next visit to the U.K. called on them in Portsmouth.
The idea was to purchase an infantry PM, but was frustrated that the paperwork would take 6 weeks to take it out of the country - we were leaving in 4 weeks. Had it been shipped not as personal luggage it would have incurred sales tax at this end of 32%. The cost at that time was 1,200 pounds for the PM and the same for the optics.

It is not the current German AI rifle as they are on the G22A2 It has a different serial number /model number designation than the German rifles. Its a facsimile of the issue rifle and someone paid a lot of coin for it to me its worth only the sum of the parts. There are in the UK some AI AW rifles from the over run of the Swedish contract with the Swedish contract Hensolt scopes with the three crowns
and the Swedish markings on the actions.

Apologies to revive an old thread.

As established by other users, the rifle auctioned in 2021 is not a genuine G22A1. The only other from this batch that recently surfaced was sold at Rock Island Auctions - this may have been the same one?

Should anyone see this post while doing their own research/due diligence for whatever reason, the rifle on GB and RIA are from a batch of 10 replica G22A1s built for the original North American AI counterpart back in 1999. I have seen the serial numbers and they are not in line with genuine issued G22A1s issued to the Bundeswehr, but they do not also line up with commercial rifles from that particular period.

There were also batches of replica Australian SR98 and Dutch equivalents. These are all genuine special editions from AI.

I have seen also a regular AW for sale with blatantly faked and inaccurate Bundeswehr markings, and also some Belgian AWs in private hands wrongly assumed to be PSG90s. Genuine issued G22 and PSG90s have never been released to the public as far as I'm aware. Belgian AWs have ABL prefixes/markings depending on the year of the particular rifle, but some were painted green and are often wrongly assumed to be PSG90s.

As @ptamony has outlined, overproduced PSG90s do seem to be floating around regardless, but they must have the national 3 crown emblem to be really regarded as part of their batch. I am inclined to suspect that the ABL rifles in private hands may have been a result of similar overproduction as I have seen photos of some in exemplary condition.

Below is an original advert for the official replica special editions for the US market.

I've heard that one before, but mainly for Schmidt & Bender scopes of a certain colour and reticule!

I think there are more L96A1s in private hands. There are purported to be 5-6, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are more. I believe Fulton's have had two pass their way, excluding ex-police PMs or commercial PMs.

Yes, one exactly like that!

Attached six pictures of my sand painted AI scope, Dutch contract. Yet have to find a rifle for it.

I’ve already seen these photos on that Facebook group ;)

I think my photo of the Dutch snipers is quite unknown. I’ll admit I did steal it from elsewhere… difficult to find though. You have a rare scope. I would love to find a SF reticule PM6x42 or a 12x42 for a very very specific build.
