Any suggestions for loading? I'd like to do some of these so my 13 yr old can comfortably shoot off the bench. He's been hunting and shooting since he was 10. I've found some loads doing a google search, but I would like to see what people here have come up with.

13 is young-- may develop a Fletch un less its a heavey gun off the bench.
as for the loads not a clue, but i'm looking at a 98 manlicker custom stocked FN oak leaf heavily grained left handed gun, i shoot both ways but......338? and i have many many long guns, but this stock....good luck

How reduced do you want to go? In my Speer manual they have reduced loads using IMR 4759 in the 1600-1800 fps range,The slowest and lighest load for the 200 gr bullet show in the regular data is 200 gr bullet with 57 gr of IMR 4064 vel of 2440 fps. Recoil would of course be lighter with a lighter bullet say 180 gr. and the slowest speed listed in the manual And then there is always cast bullets . If you want the 4759 data let me know.

I would like to bring it down to 30-06 level, if possible. I think the highest recoil caliber he has shot is a 45-70. He's not nervous about shooting anything, but he's most familiar with shooting 30-06 caliber rifles. Between family, friends, and hunting lease members, he has shot many different rifles and calibers over the last few years.

RU shooter, can you post what you have found?

If you load 180's on the low end (starting load) they should be comparable to full power 30 06' loads as far as recoil goes. Hodgdon has youth loads listed on their web site. They don't list the .338 mag but if you contact them they may reply with a suggestion. It can't hurt to try.

These are from the Speer #13 manual:

200 gr sptz.
IMR 4759
Start 25.0= 1600 fps.
Max 29.0= 1866 fps.

IMR 4064
min. load 57.0 =2440 fps.
IMR 3031
min. load 55.0= 2469 fps.
There are other loads with different powders but vel starts to climb as the powders get slower and reducing loads with slow powders is never a good idea

The last two loads are about what a 30-06 will do with a 200 gr bullet on the high end,But recoil will be less due to bigger bore dia. and less pressure, still not a powder puff load. The first two will be akin to a 30-30 or less.
A quick fix is to double up a bath towel and drape it over the shoulder.

Hope that helps some.Tim

I've seen the IMR 4759 powder mentioned a few times in my google search. I went to imrpowder.com and found this summery about the 4759. "really shines as a reduced load propellant for rifle cartridges. It's large grain size gives good loading density for reduced loads, enhancing velocity uniformity."

Here's what I found with the IMR 4759 powder that others have loaded as far as reduced recoil loads are concerned:
200 gr bul, 39 gr IMR 4759, 2335 fps.
250 gr bul, 32 gr IMR 4759, 1856 fps.
200 gr bul, 45 gr or less IMR 4759 for reduced recoil loads.

From what is in the Speer #13 manual and what others have done, do you think a 185 gr bullet with 35 gr IMR4759 powder would be a good load?

Possibly But I wouldnt start at 35 grs. 30-31 grs would be more to my liking as a starting point. 4759 is a fast rifle powder with high nitro level and can get pressures up fast . Your choice but as always start low and work up .5 gr min. at a time.

you should go to a cast bullet as that will give you the lowest recoil. the lyman cast manual has for 203 gr gas checked
14gr unique 1400 fps
13gr green dot 1360 fps
another plus you will save money on powder and bullets. another note lyman sail it got fine accuracy from all powders and bullets listed
