look on the bottom side of the barrel , just ahead of the bayonet lug. you will also see a steel lot number

 

there was an "h" stamped on the bayonet lug......also how do i tell if this was a rebuild gun?

 

the H means the bayonet lug was hardened,

no marks on the barrel at all? even under the wood near the rear sight?

 

Keepiung in mind the low number, you MAY have a Bannerman or Sedgely M1903. Does it have a Krag-type rear sight or a M1917 trigger guard and swivels? Another sign is if the receiver has been "buffed". Supposedly, Winchester M1895 barrels and even tubes from machine guns were used - thus the lack of barrel markings. Pictures would help.

 

Rick is onto a likely explanation. I've owned a nice Sedgley rifle with a turned down surplus MG barrel . Good plcs really needed here. Regards.
