Hello all,
I purchased a lovely 1867/77 Werndl (Jaeger variant) from another member here a while ago. It dawned on me later that I did not have the correct cleaning rod on the rifle. The one that I currently have on the rifle is pictured below. It measures approximately 31-1/4" and has a solid cylindrical end cap with no through hole. It measures 4.7 mm in diameter.
A bit of searching around and eventually I found one from a reputable seller. It was discounted because the threaded tip was broken off (shortened to an overall length of 31-1/4").
Unfortunately, I found out that inserting the cleaning rod into the recess in the stock resulted in a lot of felt resistance and I am not able to insert the cleaning rod into the recessed area of the stock past the second barrel band. Loosening up the barrel bands doesn't seem to improve fitment. I measured the diameter of the "correct" cleaning rod and it came out to around 5.7mm, a full 1mm thicker than the original "incorrect" cleaning rod.
Is it possible that the wood may have swelled up, preventing installation of the new cleaning rod? Can someone with a Werndl with correct cleaning rod confirm if my cleaning rod is correct?
