When they are on public display and the kids (of all ages, the phrase Hold my beer and watch this comes to mind) climb all over them, you certainly do not want anyone getting a hand caught in there.
Do not know about this model but some had springs to close the breech.
More than enough stuff on an artillery piece to get hurt on without leaving that one active.
