What's a good price for an SKS today?

My local gun shop is selling a few SKSs but I don't know anything about them. I'd like to know what a good price would be.
They have a Century Arms Yugo for $700.

They also have a couple of Norincos for $800 and $750.

Are these good deals? What should I look for? I remember when SKSs were only 300-400 just a few years ago. Are prices this high now?

Don't know anything about Yugo SKS, but the prices are too high for the two Chinese. Stocks were heavily sanded

The SKS market is all over the place, as are most firearms. Your LGS prices seem in line, generally, with areas of the rest of country. Depending on what your FFL charges to receive and DROS, there are still some deals out there, especially on the Northwest Firearms forum, because of the SKS being banned by name in Washington. I scored pretty hard on 2 Russians and a Paratrooper since October 2023. Pawn shops have been letting them go a little below market in some places. If you want to find cheap over the net, you have to trat it like a lob and hunt all the gun forums classified across the country, but you'll run into folks that won't ship. Good luck, PAX

East Coast Mid Atlantic for regional pricing,
I have sold quite a few Chinese guns at $600, a couple Romanians for around $900, and the last couple of Yugo's went for $700

and yes, the price on those Chinese are a bit high, unless there is something rare about the makers or markings

Those 2 Chinese SKSs are $450-$600 tops due to sanded stock and incomplete on accessories (sling, Bayonet, etc) Maybe, and I mean maybe add $50 if they are otherwise all matching numbers

Top one is a pinned barrel with an aftermarket sling and sanded stock, but otherwise okay. I would maybe pay $500 here in Kansas City.
Bottom one looks better, but is missing the sling and the bayonet. It is a short collar threaded barrel so possibly the better option of the 2 if both are all matching. Same $500 price cause after tax and buying the accessories you'll be at $600

Yugo is missing it's OEM sling which is different than the Chinese, as well as the oiler w/pouch and ammo pouch that normally come with them. If I was in the market for a Yugo I'd go $550-$600 or wait for a better specimen. Pristine ones are going for $750-ish on Gun Broker these days.

At the height of the Plague Panic I sold 15 SKS rifles over the course of a couple years. When they were flying of the shelf in Kali for $750, I listed mine for $650 each or 3 for $1500. The first 3 fellas bought/traded for 10 (mostly C&R Chinese), including a mismatched Romy for $650 and an Alby for $850. The Romy buyer also picked up a mixer Egyptian FN49 for $850, the Alby guy bought a group of 3 so I cut both those fellas some slack for multiple purchases. Around the same time I traded a Yugo 59/66, commercial Chinese and a home-grown Paratrooper for a Lux FN49 that they were asking $2400 for. I'd had my iron for decades so I didn't get hurt. But the market since then has softened, especially the Chinese guns, they're backdown to pre-panic prices in most places. PAX

seems like the SKS market is all over right now. Those Chinese are heavily overpriced and heavily sanded. 700 for a yugo isn’t awful in today’s market. If you could nab it for 600 out the door, I’d say go for it. If not I’d keep looking. Deals are still out there. Pick up an all matching Russian for 525 off armslist last year.

I wouldn't pay anything close to what they are asking for the Chinese ones. I wouldn't even pay the $400 as suggested. LGS has a bunch of the Albanian import Chinese ones still in the cosmoline that came in a few years ago for $899 with 1,000 rounds of ammo. If you want a yugo, look on gunbroker. I see them go for less than $700 quite a bit.

Since I moved most of my Chinese dupes or parts-built rifles, I've tried to concentrate on the more "collectible" guns or Paratroopers (my favorite shooters). Since October 2023 I picked up a '51 Russian as issued from Oregon, a '51 Russian light refurb (only the stock was forced) from Texas and a KSI Hunter from Colorado, all three combined cost less than what I thought the as issued Russian should/could have sold for. These came from fellas that had only one SKS and just wanted it gone. PAX

I am appalled by todays prices seeing as how when I bought SKS's thirty years ago, $99 for a brand new Norinco was not unheard of. Sold
most of those originals years ago at a tidy profit, but came across some beaters which were in such bad shape they looked like they had been dragged behind a truck...the stocks were trash and I just couldn't see restoring these when it would cost just as much as what I paid for them...Instead I decided to update one of these which was a stripped action with good barrrel, as a truck gun (in the manner of AR) with nice adjustable stock. That's an ATI stock. (Purists please don't have a cow!!)

I agree the prices are much more than 30 years ago when I too bought my first SKS for $70 bucks second hand. More so than they should be cheap still, they should have cost $250 back in the day. I'm happy to have been through the "I remember when" period, I too bought a bunch of rifles and bricks of ammo, Mosins too. I modded many Chinese guns when they were cheaper than dirt, some irreversibly with barrel chops, D&T mounts others with simple furniture changes. These days I'll only butcher mis-matched mongrel dogs or barreled actions. PAX
Some of my evil doings, my last build, a parts-built rifle on a SARCO receiver

Some of my earliest work, top modified ATI drag, bottom no bayo slot T6 with KSI Hunter Paratrooper action

The last rile built from scrubbed bits in phenolic furniture, Alby bayo, black bolt
Black Butler Creek stocked rifle cut to 18.5" (some commercial guns were 18.5"), front globe only, Mojo rear, 5 round mag
Home-grown 16.5" Paratrooper, P50 front with Tridelta 14X1 brake, Williams rear
Commercial Paratrooper, was in camo wood, changed out to stock with French tickler HG
