What is the best way to clean the wooden stocks without ruining the rifle's value?

I have used Murphy's Oil Soap on really cruddy (dirt caked) stocks before w/o any effect on the wood or finish. That stuff is made to clean up fine furniture and cabinets and is easy to use. Just thouroughly wipe off the excess moisture when you get it to where you want it clean wise.

I have also used the steam iron and damp terrycloth towel to raise shallow dents. Don't need to apply the iron for very long. A few seconds, lift and check the dent and redo as necessary.

I should have added that the dent raising was only done on modern rifles that got dinged in the field. If it's older than me, it don't get dents removed or stocks refinished -
