The upper shotgun is a Savage 720 in 16 gauge. Nice shape. It will sit next to the 12 gauge 720 I already have. The lower shotgun is a Remington model 11 US riot shotgun that has had a Cutts compensator added. The serial is right in the riot shotgun list as well as the barrel. The numbers don't match but are close.

It is a Cutts compensator. They were installed on military training shotguns along with Poly Chokes. I could probably unsolder the Cutts and reinstall the sight bead to restore it back to a riot shotgun. The barrel is the correct length and the serial number is in the correct range. However, the barrel serial number is not the same but falls into the riot shotgun serial number range. The barrel may have been switched when the Cutts was installed. An auction a week before had the exact same shotgun. It went for more than I wanted to pay.

The problem with restoring a gun that has a polychoke or Cutts compensator is that frequently the ends of the barrel were threaded to mount the device. I’ve see a machinist turn down the threaded end and make a patch sleeve that fits and then is hammered at the seam. This works well on trench guns because the heat shield/bayonet lug covers the patch but is harder to make look right on riot guns.

On another variable choke gun, the 520 I bought a couple weeks ago that was advertised to have a Poly Choke, in fact has a Herter's choke. The search goes on. I found a 20 gauge 520 barrel at gun parts with a delux poly choke. I just couldn't pass it up. How can I tell if it is a factory install or an aftermarket install? Thanks.
