We had one in my old hometown as late as 1992 or so, when (as I recall) the store received a huge shot in the arm by marketing all the East German stuff that was coming over at that time. My friends and I would go there and buy cheap overcoats and stuff for Halloween costumes, or if we just wanted to pretend to be the bad guys in Red Dawn.

That stuff was incredibly inexpensive. I think I bought an unissued Grenztruppen overcoat for about $5.00. It was a really warm one, too; I wore it for years, though I probably looked like Dwight Schrute.

There are still a few fairly good surplus stores here and there, but a "pretty good" surplus store in 2022 is nowhere near a "really crappy" one from about 1985. There's really not much genuine government surplus left anymore, sadly.
