Just looking at some of my rifles it is interesting to see the overlaps in manufacture or conversion of the individual Marks of rifle.

A Martini Enfield converted in 1897 and a Magazine Lee Enfield Mark I 1897.

A 1907 Short Magazine Lee Enfield Mark I*** and a 1907 Short Magazine Lee Enfield Mark III.

And because I have one a 1908 Magazine Lee Enfield Mark I*

Interesting how old rifles were being converted at the same time that new marks were being introduced into service.

Enfield were still making new Martini receivers as late as 1903, though perhaps they were manufactured earlier and stamped later. This one was new-made for a Martini Enfield rather than converted from a Martini Henry. Astute historians will spot Queen Victoria's crown on this 1903 receiver, even though she died in 1901.

Contrast that with this BSA LE1* from 1902, with the correct King Edward VII crown.
