SKS Cleaning Rod Fit

Could someone please explain to me why I have to bend the end of the cleaning rod to make it fit between the two 'brackets' at the top? I can see the top most bracket is smaller, but I still have to bend the tip past that to make it screw in. I've looked at a lot of photos on the forum and they all look the same as mine and many appear bent as well. Appreciate the feedback.

I figure they arranged it that way so that the cleaning rod would still be positively retained if the bayonet were in the extended position.

As far as I have ever been able to determine, the cleaning rods on all the SKS rifles I have ever dealt with do not have a nut in the stock that the threaded end of the rod screws into.

Not sure what you mean by "bend"? But the rod does have to be lightly flexed to slide it in past the keepers. And as Boris explained, the bayonet collar will contact the rod in either the open or closed position to hold it in place. With the bayonet half way open, the rod can then be flexed past the keepers to pull it out.

So, do you mean "flex"?
