I was at the gun show today scoping out Enfields. I spotter a No1 in a rack so I stopped to check it out.
It was marked 1917 Sht LE III* by Enfield.
Stock looked a bit funny, lightly cleaned but different. So I flipped it over to check and see if the forend matches or if it is a sporter rescue. Forend is marked SLAZ. Hmmm, gotta be a sporter rescue, right? I start looking it over more but I cannot check the bolt because the huge zip tie covers the ser. #. Then I notice D^D on top of the receiver ring. Son of a gun! A ShtLE III* given? to Australia and rebuilt some time after that. Sadly it had a coat of BLO on it so it was hard to read all the markings especially in the bad lighting.
Unfortunately I did not have gun money in my pocket-picking up a 1950 Long Branch this week-so it stayed there. I did get the dealers card and plan to give him a call and see where he will next set up.
