....Post war K98 of the week 40....TheGreenMan.....

Ok hopefully this will be a great learning experiance for all viewers...each week I will take volunteers to take detailed pictures of a Post WWII K98 to put up on line for the forum members to see--evaluate--and learn.

Here are the ~general~ rules beyond the normal forum rules...

#1 Keep it Civil....If the gun is not correct from it's original Post War configuration, please post specific's so others can learn--do not devalue the weapon with criticism and leave--you must back up your statement for the rest of the forums to learn. If the conversation becomes out of line--I will put it back in check--remember this is a learning experiance for all and many people viewing are not as educated as weekly posters and come here for a reason--education, lets help out!

#2 The Post War K98 of the week gun should be the only gun pictured for that week, unless your using another photo for a example to back-up a statement.

#3 Any Post War K98 conventional length action mauser (R/C's, Yugo K98 configuration, Isreali's, Romanian)

#4 The gun can not be sporterized in any way, don't care if it's refinished from original configuration, but no sporter projects.

#5 The photo's of the "Post War K98" of the week should not be copyrighted in any way so the photo's can be shared freely. If your particular gun photo's are copyrighted~~~please find another example for all to enjoy.

#6 Do not edit or remove any photo's or description of the displayed rifle after it has been posted, It would be nice to use these postings to become a perminate record for years to come.

#7 Be prepared to help---take the time to photo a gun you have even if it's correct OR wrong---we will need guns every week---that's 52 guns a YEAR---so we will need help from all folks.

Ok......it starts here.....

Finally have a chance to post this.

My slightly bubba-ed Czech K98.

It is almost completely devoid of German markings. The only ones seem to be the rear sight leaf spring and the trigger guard.
Circle T marked barrel and receiver. BRNO address on the side rail. Added sling swivels on the semi kriegsmodell stock and rear barrel band.
Stamped matching numbers on the receiver, bolt shroud, cocking piece, and trigger guard (which is not a 'winter' trigger guard). Electropencil marked safety. Barrel band spring is German marked and serial numbered. The Czechs probably didn't care about that since no one would be able to see it. I'm not sure what is going on with the stamp to the left of the serial number on the receiver. I know it is supposed to be the Czech lion but if it is the lion it looks like it got hit by a truck, it is just a mangled mess.

The bad: someone (not sure who) cut off the sling bar on the rear barrel band. And the band is non matching. Front band is a M48 or similar. Bubba decided that his bold had to be shiny and took a grinder and sandpaper to the whole bolt body and extractor. No serial number left on the bolt root. Floor plate and follower are replacement German marked, though matching each other. And lastly bubba gouged out (with a dull spoon apparently) wood around the barrel behind the sight to put on a clamp-on scope mount. I guess I can be grateful that he didn't drill and tap the receiver.

I have a couple of these Czech post war Mausers which prompts my question: when The Kreigs Modell book's authors talk of an "Unstained stock", does that mean the weapon was issued with no finish, just rough sanded wood? Not oiled or anything
And yes, I must send some photos. It's on my list.
Thanks,

No, it means the stocks were not stained with a color. Most postwar stocks were sealed with some type of sealer, most likely linseed oil or something similar. Postwar stocks had better finishing than wartime stocks though, some late stocks appear to be raw wood.

Scrubbed CZECH Post War K-98

Finally got time to put this post together. Based on feedback from mrfarb, I rebelled against the purists that discourage stripping the glossy finish someone hastily applied to one of my Kriegsmodells. See the photo of the stock from the sling cut to the butt plate cup. I stripped the old varnish and then added 3 coats of hot linseed oil. I'm pleased with the way it turned out. This rifle came as part of a trade in the early '60's but I shot it for the first time only a month ago using some corrosive Rumanian 8mm military ball. The local range is only 100 yards.
The rifle seems to comply with the criteria noted in the Kriegsmodell. book. Based on the scrubbed receiver, perhaps it was destined for the fledgeling Israeli Army. The only odd feature is the rough grind marks on the sides of the rear sight. At first, I though it might be to remove a wartime scope base, but then why grind the opposite side as well? I'd appreciate any opinions on this point or any other observations member might offer.
