Looks like a cut for a disc, for unit or id, if some sort. Sure someone will know, for sure.

Yes, Danish, CMP had a bunch of these at one point

 

My Danish M1 has the same cut out,must have been rack number.

 

maybe you can find one to put back in.

 

That SA EMcF cartouche is worth money, there are guys that make a walnut plug for the hole, some
just leave it alone, cartouche is from mid '42 to mid to later '43 and difficult to find in nice condition.
Early EMcF stocks have the tapered clip latch cut while later had the flat bottom.

 

Thank you guys for the info! Glad to know it was done by an arsenal. I have quite a few M1 stocks that my grandfather amassed over many years and this was the only one I've noticed that had this cut. So I was unsure of its origin.

There used to be a guy on the CMP forums that had repros with the screw. I got one for my Dane build with a GHS stock

 

Does it have a serial number in the stock behind the stock disk? Many Danish stocks do. The other thing you frequently find is the rifle sight dope on a sticker in the barrel channel. There are a lot of variants. Yours looks to have been just a US stock. You will also see many Beech replacement stocks as well; but usually the handguards are still Walnut. I believe there were several waves of rifles sent by us after the war and then new rifles were purchased from PB,BMB.

 

No serial number or dope sheet on this one.

 

The Danes and Norwegians make a dime sized coin with a hole that fits perfectly into the hole in the stock. I tacked one into mine. I have a Danish Winchester, original stock, bolt, receiver, trigger group and various bits with a new VAR barrel, it is a super accurate rifle I use for Garand matches.

 

There is a guy on the CMP forum who sells the discs.

 

Would you happen to know how to contact him? I'm not a member on that forum.
