Odd that they didn't use ammo boxes or crates?

 

Loose rounds were loaded in the Lewis gun's (Type 92 LMGs) 47 or 97 round drum magazines.

These boxes would have been packed in crates probably similar to the ones I recently posted.

I just realized that I don’t have any individual examples of 7.7 mm rimmed ammo. I do have a pretty good collection of other 6.5 and 7.7mm ammunition. I’ll have to start looking for some.

 

Pretty common at a cartridge show, but sometimes you have to dig through some British .303 to find it.

 

This is the Type 92 Navy 7.7mm MG (Lewis) that would use the cartridges you show. It is on a Navy ground mount in the A/A position fitted with 97 Rd mag. They were also on Navy aircraft as flexible mounted MGs...
