Found out that MS is bad for bluing. Did a bolt with a blued handle. Let it soak for days, since work (truly) prevents getting much done between shifts.
Well, the bluing faded quite a bit. I guess it turns out that it contains benzene, which is supposedly the thing that slowly removes the bluing.
So I guess mineral spirits is OUT, and now I'll be forced to use Kroil. That's fine, as it sure sounded like the best answer anyway. Just thought I could get away with, or do better with, letting the stuff work through soaking. MS was cheap in bulk, and sounded like it could be almost as effective, if not equally.
This is sort of a PSA since I've seen mineral spirits recommended often around the net, but also looking for more info on mineral spirits specifically. Anyone else ever noticed the removal of bluing?
A guy I work with has blued before, and immediately told me about the benzene in MS, and that it removes bluing. He uses Kroil, by soaking with a wrapped rag.
This is like the time I learned that rust removers also acid etch steel.
