What was the purpose of these low slung holsters the Black & Tans and Irish National Army used with their revolvers???

Makes for an easier draw imo. You see the guy second from the right easily has his hand on the revolver, just raise his arm and he’s drawn the gun. An early thigh rig, the way I always wear my revolver or auto at a 2 gun shoot except with a rig using nylon and velcro. Nothing new under the sun. Neat photos.
