Has anyone seen a bolt handle on a Type 35 like this?

I had the opportunity to look at a Type 35 for sale and saw a bolt handle I haven't seen before on any Japanese rifle let alone a Type 35. This one is threaded, and the plumb can be removed. The rifle appears to be complete along with Dust Cover and the bolt not serialized. Any ideas?

The Simpson one! It's sold now, so here's the full listing: Simpson Limited | Antique & Modern Firearms

My group was discussing it and also thought that it looked weird. The Finns allegedly did some stuff with Type 35s to make carbines, but I've never seen photos of those, so we were theorizing without getting anywhere that it's possible the Finns modified this one with a new bolt. I think it's just as likely that a Finnish bubba modified that like you sometimes see with Type 30 and 38 sights to make them more like Finn Mosins.

Simpson didn't mention where this one specifically came from, but it is import marked, and the one I bought from them a couple months ago came from Finland ( https://www.gunboards.com/threads/m...d-cartouche.1274294/?post_id=11581551&nested_view=1&sortby=oldest#post-11581551). They're getting a lot of imports from Finland, so it's a decent assumption.

While acknowledging the risk here, I put the money down as my curiosity was killing me. The folks at Simpson assured me that this went with the lot from Finland like Kai's. I never found a Type 35 that wasn't a trainer/clicker or a rust-bucket garden stake, and I figured it would be the Unicorn rifle of my lifetime. I read Kai's post a while back, and I am glad I can share his sentiment. I'll post some pictures to add to the above discussion, and we'll see whether it is a Finn bolt or a Bubba Special.

I think you did great! One of our group was going to buy it but got caught up with work and forgot to call right when they opened. It’s a nice looking example and was $500 cheaper than mine and right In the sweet spot for market price.

Absolute worst case scenario, you can buy a type 35 bolt, which seem to pop up from time to time. The early Arisakas are all mismatched to pieces anyway, so it’s no loss.

Congratulations, man! Please post some good photos when it arrives, particularly of the cartouches.
