I purchased a GSG MP40 in 9mm last year as a novelty item. Got it for a good price NEW. Always wanted to own one but the real deal MP40s were way out of my price range. Seems to be made somewhat well but on the cheap side with its use of plastic parts.

Magazine is very hard to load and don't recommend trying to load anywhere near the 25 round capacity unless you have gorilla strength. The safety is also on the cheap and a but flimsy

One of the main problems I read about online and experienced personally was that the charging handle was of poor design. It pulls out way too easily and flies out occasionally when firing. Luckily there is a replacement charging handle out there made by MFI. The MFI charging handle is more "period correct" and locks into place so it will not fly out of the bolt assembly anymore. It was an ease to install and look pretty cool too. Why GSG did not go with this design originally is beyond me. The folks over at MFI nailed a simple solution to a bad design problem. While the price is little on the high side, installing it made me want to take the gun to the range more instead of selling it or tucking it away in the safe for long term storage. For those that own one of these replicas here is the link to the replacement charging handle part: MFI GSG MP40 9mm Cocking Handle / Charging Handle / WWII Period Correct / Price Includes S&H via 1st Class USPS + Insurance

I do enjoy shooting the GSG MP40 and it does attract a lot of attention at the range. Most people think it is the real deal. There are a few trigger bar upgrades that I might try to take up the slack in trigger pull.

While I would love for the pistol to be more user friendly out of the box and wish the pistol had a better build quality, I still am happy with my purchase because it did not break the bank.

When they first came out there was a SOT offering full auto conversions for them, at a cost of 500 bucks each, I found that price a bit high, but as a SOT myself I always wanted to take a look at the firing guts to see where he may have filed a part down, or how to go about doing it myself, but, I always figured spare parts would be hard to come by, and I didn't want to ruin a good pistol.

I does cry for an SBR conversion though.

Just got the new charging handle from MFI, I’m pretty excited about it, went in very easily and replicates the correct look of the original. I’ve ordered stuff from MFI before, and this arrived quickly just like before. Looks like I’ll be ordering the new safety as well. This charging handle upgrade is an absolute necessity if you’re wanting your mp40 to look right. After I installed the new charging handle I decided to try all the upgrades from MFI for the MP40. I ordered the replacement sight hood, safety and takedown pin. I figured that maybe one or two of them would be an easy install, usually every time I order gun parts something has to be filed on to fit. Not these, they were all exact replacements with no fitting needed. Even the safety is simple to fit, you only need a torx bit screwdriver. The install took a grand total of 1 hour to disassemble and reassemble, and there’s video on YouTube available. I’ve had this version of the MP40 for about 3 years now, and tried out some of the competitors aftermarket parts, and for realism, quality, and ease of installation I’d recommend MFI.

The MFI sight hood fit perfectly, looks correct, and worked well with another brand muzzle nut - even the detent pin still works.
The takedown pin is two piece, both sides with domed screw heads that replaces the “c”clip that I lost immediately after the first time I took it apart. This one is a lot easier to keep together.
MFI Improved WWII Style Takedown / Take-Down Pin for the ATI GSG MP40 / Price Includes USPS Ground Select / $8.75 off if ordering with any other product with S&H included.
The safety is a nice piece of machine work, and replaces the oversized zamak knob that originally came with it. And it now looks right and functions the same way.
Im pretty happy getting this Mp40 copy rolling and looking like an actual Mp40 now.
