I hope I have one of 8000 Type 99 Long Rifles made at Nagoya. I like to share a few pics and appreciate any feedback you guys can provide. It came with a bayonet. I have some questions on that to for later.

Anyone with a real good memory may recall some of my "ground Mum" negativity. I deciced to over look that and some of the missing tid bits. Now I have a long and a short 99. I only learned about the long 99's last week on this forum.

I left this image in a very large file. I think it is key to this rifle.

Thanks for posting the photos. Great pickup for sure. I believe that highest known serial number is 8232, so it is relatively rare bird. Your rifle is scarce enough that the defaced mum does not matter much. Don Schlickman makes the correct AA wings and even the correct repo monopod if you are interested.

First, that’s a great, hard to find rifle. Awesome grab! Second, the markings on that bayonet are quite interesting, can you take clearer pics of the inspection marking on the back of the crossgaurd, the pommel from the rear showing all markings, and the top of the tang? Would appreciate it.

Congrats on the Nagoya long 99!

Adding a Nagoya Long rifle is always a good day. Toyo Kogyo made almost 4 times as many as Nagoya. Since a vast majority of long rifle mums are defaced, it’s easy to overlook.

If you go hunting for parts, there is a difference between long and short rifle AA arms. Long rifles arms a fatter, slightly shorter and notched on top/bottom. Long rifle monopods are also different, a little longer and different spring setup for the bottom sling swivel.

I was looking at purchase of either an old(miss match number) or a new(repro) dust cover and read the 99 long rifle used a longer dust cover than the 99 short rifle. I think that is the same length as the 38 dust cover. Is that right? The underside of the 38 cover has a tab that is not used on the 99 short covers. Did the 99 long rifle and 38 use the same dust cover?

I cannot find the reference to 6" (or was it 6 1/4) long 99 covers but I did find this older Gun Boards post:

From left to right, late Type 38, "early" Type 38 (which covers the majority of production), and Type 99. Note that there are some reallllllly late Type 38s that lack the bracket and some reallllllly early Type 99 long rifle dust covers that have the bracket. That probably has to do with the fact that the early Type 99 longs started production in 1940, while the last Type 38s rolled out in 1942.

I decide to go with a late style 38, miss match number dust cover. The finish matches up pretty good.

I ordered repro monopod from Sarco. Probably a waste of money but I wanted a couple other items so worked out no extra shipping for low cost repro.

I plan to talk with Don about repro wings after i get a look at that Sarco monopod.
