Hello. I have acquired a 1905 model rifle. The variant is the Ross Mark II Rifle with Mark III Rear Sight. Not one of the * designation variants. It appeared at a local gunshop and caught my eye. They had it on for cheap as a wall hanger that is unsafe to shoot due to the bolt horror stories and a failed bolt stop. I gathered pictures of it and began doing my homework before purchasing. With it being a 1905 and not a 1910 there is no hazard of the bolt flying out after shooting from improper assembly. I went back the following day and purchased the gun with the hopes that it could be one of the surviving 34 of the 1000 lost in a fire that were issued to the royal northwest mounted police. Unfortunately I believe it doesn’t not have their markings. The bolt stop will need a larger spring to create more tension to work properly no big issue there. The rifle is only missing the two wooden hand guards, a few swivels and the correct thicker barrel band. It was brush painted with a terrible looking black paint that I have just stripped from the stock. Will hit the stock again to remove any remaining and then use multiple coats of linseed oil to bring it back to life. I am in contact with a guy who makes many stocks for these rifles. He does not have a template he could use for the top hand guard in between the rear sight and action due to never seeing a variation like this. But can make any other woodwork happen. If anyone could assist us with preparing a correct hand guard for that section it would be great. Will post up markings for any additional information. In any experts can shed some light on this rifle please do. Attached is a link leading to an identical variation of this rifle. This will be the finished product. Ross Mark II Rifle with Mark III Rear Sight Thank you.
