An unlikely convergence of events led me to pick up my first Martini Henry MkIV. I have mostly been interested in post-BP era martial arms so these are quite new to me.

This one is dated 1887, and looks to be in very nice shape overall. The stock has some marks … there are two Rawalpindi roundels, and older one with date 1900 and newer one with date 1908. The original Enfield marks are basically gone or obscured. The Nepalese unit marks appear to me as “Chandradal Battalion.”

There is some very minor (and old/arrested) pitting on barrel near wood line in a few places. Inside of receiver was fairly dirty as was the bolt/striker assembly. Functions as it should. Bore is very good at least. Previous owner fired 3 rounds of old Kynoch ammo, he said it worked as it should.

Penciled on the brass butt plate spacer is some previous owners name … “Paul E Lastname” then Metropolis, IL, then 12/16/2009, and $516.00. If you’re that guy, please message me!

It also had a Nepalese sling, plus bayo and scabbard. My best guess is the bayo is a P1886 that was updated to the P1887 standard and got a new cross guard. Bayo must have a lot of patina, or was refinished, or both.

Some pics below.

Looks like the front sight has been replaced with a more modern type. Possibly done in 1908? But it looks too modern and not a military type replacement.
May well be. I don’t know the front sight variations.

I did a google search, and it appears that this "type" of front sight was used. BUT, its not the typical MH front sight seen on 1885 or 1887 MH rifles. I know they did a B or C version on MK IV rifles......which this may well be one of those with factory upgrades??

I'm not sure if this was an arsenal upgrade??

Others will chime in on this.

There are three recognized patterns of MK IV.

This front sight is found both Pattern B and C Mk IV's

Thanks kindly DoubleD for this clarification. My rifle is either pattern B or C given the long nock form. I can’t find the serial number on receiver … there is a struck through 215 on bottom front of receiver, and the barrel is marked E4097 over /88.

Well this was a relatively odd purchase that I suppose could be chalked up to luck. I’m not really sure what these rifles are worth nowadays but do know what IWA is listing them for. A fellow was walking the show with this slung over his shoulder. Various folks looked at it, including me. He was asking 1100. Later, I looked at it again and he was asking 900. Then I was leaving the show, the fellow was sitting outside with another fellow who had a cherry Ruger No.1. And the martini owner really wanted that Ruger but explained he didn’t have the cash. At that point he offered the Martini for 800. Said I didn’t have that much cash. Then he asked the trade value of the Mossberg 500 I had been carrying. Said I’d been asking 300. Probably worth 200, but I had 100 in it. So I traded the shotgun plus 4 bills for this Martini. Figured at worst I wasn’t getting hurt on the deal.

Can't recall when I last saw any sort of Martini at a show here in the Piney Woods. Or, for that matter, any single shot. Ruger No. 1? Crickets. Ruger No. 3? Crickets. Trapdoors? Nope. Aggravating a little bit.
