What was your first gun? When? and Why? tell me about it.

My dad gave me his 50s era marlin bolt action .22 when I was about 10. And he bought me an 870 Express for my 14th birthday. But the first gun I bought myself was an SKS when I was about 16. Norinco, bought it at the local gun show. Dad actually signed for it, to simply things as I was a minor, but I paid for it.

First gun I bought for myself....Norinco Poly-Tec Legend AK-47 for $400 while in college from my landscaping summer job money, pre-ban obviously!

I got a Diana air rifle for my 12th birthday.
My first real gun was a Winchester 9422, which I was allowed to buy when I reached 16.
Still have it.
Best regards,
A

Single shot 22lr Remington rifle.

Won in a raffle at a high school festivel (for the sturents only) held in the high school building.

Walked 3 miles to home afterwards (at night), through town, carrying the rifle and being passed by police cars who did not stop. Parents almost crapped when I showed them what I had won but they let me keep it.

Crossman BB gun. Nice gesture, but bad idea. I wasn't very responsible when I got it. Some folks get more mature later.

16 years old at Christmas: Ruger 10/22. I don't have it anymore.
18 years old self-purchase: S.S. Kriesge dimestore single-shot 12ga.
Bubba'd Schmidt-Rubin 1911.

From there I went all out milsurp: Finn & Soviet Mosin-Nagants, M-1 Garand, M-1 Carbine, T38 and T99 Arisakas, Japtalian Carcano Commission rifle, SKS, you-name-it.

Then came grad school. Expenses. Pawn and sales on commission.
Now I'm back to Mosin-Nagants, the M1 rifle, and the SKS.

The first gun I bought was a Cooey Model 60 .22 rifle. In Northern MN(Now sits above the fireplace here in Northern AZ) Paid $40 - took me about a month of work and savings. (I pruned and trimmed blueberry bushes) I was 15 and poor. That gun means more to me that the ones that I paid (a bit) more for. WM

A Browning .22, the autoloader with the funky bottom eject. My grandfather gave it to me when I was probably 7 or 8. I love that rifle and hope to pass it on some day.

Semi auto .22. Think it was a "Glenfield model 60". Am I remembering right? Bought it on my 18th birthday in 1978 from the Penney's catalog for about 60 bucks. Got to use my associates discount. That was the first rifle I ever owned, shot, or even held. My dad didn't want anything to do with firearms of any kind, so all my brothers and I were strictly on our own when it came to guns. Never got around to asking dad why he was so uptight about guns. Just one of those topics you knew you weren't supposed to bring up around him! Always seemed kinda odd for the WW2 vet, country boy that he was.

A Daisy lever-action BB gun when I was 10. Killed hundreds of sparrows with it - and the barn cats loved me.

First gun I bought myself was a brass frame reproduction 1858 Rem C&B revolver in 1970 just after I left the service. $29 Haven't shot it in many years but still have it. SW

Yugoslavian 59/66 SKS. I paid way too much for it at the time, but the same price today would be a bargan. Unfortunatley it was stolen last spring. I have recently replaced it with another this November.

First real gun was the Christmas of 1955 or 1956. Winchester Model 77 22lr autoloader, clip-fed variant. Still have it, still shoot it some. Remains an absolutely first rate plinker.
