Just got home with this. Not sure if it is a sword or knife..... Overall length is 23 1/4 ", blade is 15 3/4". Seems to be made from a very light wood. Was brought back by US soldier Richard Erskine Carver whose son claims he said he took it from a Japanese soldier. Anyone have info on this type weapon ?

Need some comments on this please !!!! Is it something a WWII Japanese soldier would have carried ? Is there a name for it ?

Its a short sword, wakizashi, in a shirasaya or resting scabbard, a means of storing a blade, not meant to be used as is. Condition of blade does not look good from limited photos. Has added metal fittings on both ends of scabbard section, Have you removed the hilt section to see if its signed?
