was watching ww2 in color on the American heroes channel the episode is called (THE ISLAND WAR) in the first ten minuites it shows Japanese soldiers in parade march one of them has a towel similar to this attached to his bayonet on his gun . why I thought this was a towel? is it not a towel?

It is a towel, maybe he didn't have a flag and didn't want to be left out of the celebration.

Or being used as an expedient guidon.
Helping to keep confusion orderly since Christ was a corporal.

Or just a sweat towel.
Pretty commonly used item if one ever bothered to be a soldier.
Basic use for headbands is keeping sweat from the eyes.
Handy on the farm, jungles, or just mowing the yard.
