Hi all,

my grand-grand-father was a German soldier and fought in Flanders in 1917/18. He earned the Iron Cross first and second class for bravery.

But when he came back home after the war he is told to have said: "You can´t imagine how it is to live even worse than the animals. War is big shit".

Your´s

Bernhard

Societies pay a horrible price for the damage of the human psychy wrought by combat. While many benefit from their experiences in the military, way too many come back with PTSD, physical wounds, and broken spirits.

Alot of German's ended up in a very different trench... WWI was a gruesome thing.

A lot of others wound up the same. And - all wars are gruesome. I doubt I'll ever forget the VC/PAVN dead policed up outside the Long Binh perimeter after the (failed) ground attack during Little Tet. I was lucky - only saw and smelled the trucks come by with the dead on the way to a mass burial trench. ARVN did the clean-up. A bad job.

I'm sure that this happened in lots of places that haven't been discovered yet. Lately they have been showing a lot about the First World war on Discovery and History channels. I think that they are being more trueful now than they were in the past. If you get a chance, check it out. Its interesting and informative.
