I'm a newbie on this board and don't have to many posts under my belt. I'm not exactly sure if this is the proper place to post this question...

Anyhow, some time back I spotted a picture of an AK47 that had an SKS spike bayonet on it.

I thought that it looked cool and would like to make one of my AKM's into that format.

I know I need a spike bayo, with hardware a bayonet mount.

Spotted the bayonet on Gun Broker, but no where on the net can I find a bayonet mount.

I know I'd have to mod the lower hand guard, that's not an issue as I have several spares to do that too.

Where would I get the parts necessary to mod my barrel to accept a spike bayo?

Also, would it matter what "type" SKS I get the parts from?

Would it matter if it's Russian or Chinese?

Any help, links or info would be appreciated.

I'm not sure just how they managed it but you're looking at a lot of work. A Chinese one would be easier to find. The mount for the bayonet is pressed on the front of the SKS barrel and includes the FSB. If you could find the part, you would need to cut the bayo mount off. And, because the bayo and mount is about 16 inches long (on my Chinese SKS) it would have to be mounted in front of the FSB on the AK in order to fit the bayo all the way back to the back of the lower HG. You'd also have to weld the mount to the AK barrel. When the bayo is extended there would be nowhere for the bayo to lock onto the barrel. If you did mount the bayo behind the FSB on the AK you would need to shorten it. All in all, a very difficult thing to do that in the end may not work anyway.

Welcome! You are talking of a Chine Type 56 AK!

The whole thing is 1 unit consisting of Front sight base and bay/lock mechanism, so you have to remove your front sight and install the new unit, dont think legal in Cal.

These units are almost impossible to find and the last few on Gun Broker were costing about $175.- $220. if you can find one!

There was a cheap real cheap THING made and sold for about $70' which clamps on barrel by means of a Screw on each side! Ugly as HELL and JUNK!

PS! if you find one you can buy a bottem handguard with the cut out for bay in it for about $30.++

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The "cheap real cheap THING" you refer to was made in China and is a standard (short) Type 56 AK spike bayonet with a simple attachment made to fit an AK(S) which has no bayonet lug. They were sold by Omega Weapons Systems. Omega no longer shows the bayonet with mount on their website, but they still have AK spike bayonets and bayonet cut handguards.

Whether or not they were actually made for the Chinese military is probably one of those questions which will never be answered, but Omega is not known for making false claims.
