I was up in town yesterday and stopped by the Big 5 Sports. They had a 1944 Izhevsk laminate stock 91/30. It was arsenal refinished with close to 100% blue and a nice stock. All stamped matching (butt plate last 3-4 numbers only), no line outs. The markings on the top of the receiver were almost gone though. The serial number was the only good strong marking, probably re-stamped when it was re-arsenaled. The muzzle was counter-bored and the clerk said the bore didn't look that good. I couldn't get in a good stop to get enough light down the bore with the bolt in to check it out.

I'm just curious if you would have passed on it too?

A 1944 Izhevsk is fairly common. The laminated stock is nice, but not earth shaking. Unless the rifle were an ex-sniper, or had an MO, SA, or other unusual feature, like an older hex receiver, I don't see too much special about it.

I did. I graduated in '05 with my BSEE. Now I just work here for EMRTC.

A single AAA maglite fits in a MN chamber perfectly. Works in a pinch for lighting up the bore.

I'd have passed on that one though.
Yeah. I have a 2xAAA maglite. It fits at an angle and does a decent job from trying it out on the MNs I have. Big 5 wasn't originally on the agenda, so I never thought to bring it.

No big loss though. There's the gun show this weekend, so I'll poke around there. Maybe checkout Big 5 again since I'll be up there.

If the price was reasonable, there's always room for one more :D

Big 5 usually does not clean the bore. They may wipe down the rifle so customers don't get greased when looking, but unless they ran a patch through the bore, I would guess it's got cosmoline in it, makeing it appear to look "Not so good". Of course, the clerk may have wanted the riflle as well.

well i don't know how much it was so i can't say if i would have passed

even though i already have a 44 izhevsk 91/30 and even if the bore was a bit less than perfect the laminate stock would be enough to justify a purchase if the price was right... i don't have a laminate stock 91/30 yet
